With nothing else to do over the long weekend I ventured out to explore Mysore. Mysore is a 3 hour drive from Bangalore. We hired a cab and set out on Friday morning to conquer the land of palaces and exotic gardens.
Our first stop was “Srirangapatna”. The ranganatha swamy temple here hosts the largest image of lord Vishnu reclining over the serpent. Apart from the temple, we also saw the summer palace which Tipu sultan built on defeating the british in a war and the place where Tipu met his death. Inside the palace we could see the paintings of tipu and his family members, swords, guns used by Tipu in war…all well preserved.
We resumed our journey and drove towards Mysore. By the time we reached mysore it was four. We had our lunch, slept for about an hour and set out again to catch a glimpse of the mysore palace. It happened to be one of those days when the palace is lit up fully from the outside in the evening. When the lights were turned on we were awe struck by the beauty. We just stood there doing nothing but staring at the monument for an hour. History sometimes is so fascinating. We also had a chance to get inside the palace the next day. When I stood there inside the palace overlooking the huge garden outside I felt like a king. What a life!!...i wondered…
The next morning we went to a temple in somnathpur. Somnathpur is situated approximately 45 Kms from mysore. This temple is over 800 years old. For a temple that old it is surprisingly well maintained. The temple is famous for its carvings and sculptors. Just outside the temple there is a post box where you can post yourself a card which will have the image of the temple as the stamp.
After lunch we went to brindavan gardens. The garden is laid just below the dam which holds the river cauvery water. We waited till it got dark because that’s when the fountains are illuminated and which is what most of the tourists come to see.
It was dark and we started making our way back to Bangalore. So that’s the story…It was a short trip but very satisfying nevertheless.
